Driving on the roads of Malawi is quite an adventure. Only the main roads such as the M1 have tarmac. Who wants to see the rest of this beautiful country has to drive through the bush. Those who are bold enough to do this are rewarded with lasting memories of an impressive landscape, small villages, and hopefully no breakdown.

From the airplane approaching Lilongwe, we see how organically pathways lead to small villages.

Whenever we stop our car, children run towards us screaming “Azungu, Azungu” (white person) and then they usually ask “Give me my ball, give me my money, give me sweats!”. On the panoramic picture above the children on the road behind us are already approaching.

The dirtroads through the bush very often are lined with high grass. This grass often looks very nice but we should stay outside because there are a lot of venomous snakes in high grass.

In the north of Malawi there might be some rain even outside the rain season. The image above shows rainclouds hanging between the mountains near Livingstonia.

The tarmac roads, like this one between Mzuzu and Nkhata Bay, are very nice at daytime. But driving at night is very dangerous.
